Summary

On 26 April 2023, ITALIA-BIRMANIA.INSIEME APS, an NGO based in Italy, submitted a specific instance to the Italian NCP alleging that seven Italian companies active in the garment sector and operating in Myanmar had not observed the General Policies (Chapter II), Human Rights (Chapter IV), and Employment and Industrial Relations (Chapter V) provisions of the Guidelines. Specific issues additionally related to freedom of trade union association.

The submitters have stated their belief that it is not possible for the companies to continue operating responsibly in Myanmar after the military coup and have requested the NCP to invite the companies to implement a plan for responsible exit in consultation with legitimate Burmese and international trade unions.

The NCP is currently conducting its initial assessment.
