Summary | Read the Initial Assessment published 22 January 2021: English On 10 September 2020, Rights and Accountability in Development (RAID), Association des Jeunes Tchadiens de la Zone Pétrolière (AJTZP), and the Public Interest Law Center (PILC), two NGOs and a law firm, submitted a specific instance to the UK NCP alleging that Glencore UK, a corporate and financial services company and subsidiary of Glencore Plc in Switzerland, had not observed the General Policies (Chapter II), Disclosure (Chapter III), Human Rights (Chapter IV), and Environment (Chapter IV) provisions of the Guidelines. Specifically, issues related to the environmental and human rights due diligence in relation to wastewater leaks and an alleged oil spill at the Badila Oilfield in Chad, owned by Glencore. The submitter further alleged that the company had not meaningfully engaged with local communities, contributed to the communities’ sustainable development, or effectively disclosed information affecting the communities. On 22 January 2021, the UK NCP published an initial assessment deciding to accept the issues relating to a 2018 wastewater spill and subsequent alleged oil leak for further consideration. The NCP offered mediation but has since made the decision to suspend the case due to parallel proceedings. |
