Summary | Read the Final Statement published by the NCP 25 May 2022: English On 30 October 2018, IndustriALL Global Union (IndustriALL) and Syndicat National Autonome des Travailleurs d’Electricité et de Gaz “Sonelgaz” (SNATEG) submitted a specific instance to the US NCP alleging that General Electric Company (GE), a US-headquartered electric company, had not observed the General Policies (Chapter II) or Human rights (Chapter IV) provisions of the Guidelines relating to their operations in Algeria. Specifically, issues related to an alleged failure by GE to conduct due diligence in its business relationship with Socièté Nationale de l’Electricité et du Gaz (Sonelgaz), an Algerian state-owned utility that provides electricity and natural gas, resulting in the violation of workers’ rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining, including through alleged harassment, threats, firings, and otherwise disciplining of SNATEG leaders and members for their union activity. The U.S. NCP accepted the Specific Instance for further examination and offered mediation on the issues raised by the submitters. Both parties accepted the NCP’s offer of mediation. In-person mediation was delayed due to the covid pandemic. On 25 May 2022, the NCP published a final statement concluding the specific instance with a confidential agreement between the parties. The US NCP additionally recommended that both parties continue to work together, maintaining and building on the positive relationship that they developed during mediation, to address the issues raised, and that both parties engage in any relevant follow-up to the Final Statement. The US NCP may, in collaboration with the parties, decide to conduct a follow up on the agreement. #nationallaw #directlylinked #riskmanagementsystem #remedy #duediligence #labourrights #reprisals #FACB #renewableenergy #oilandgas #confidentiality #reprisals #externalmediators #localsubsidiary #UNGPs #Internationalhumanrightstreaties #agreement |
